How Do Adverse Childhood Experiences Affect Health in Adulthood?

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or traumatic events that occur in childhood and adolescence (before the age of 16-18) significantly increase our risk for mental health concerns, autoimmune conditions, reproductive or hormonal concerns, and metabolic concerns. Some of the most common ACEs include:

  • your parents being separated or getting divorced
  • seeing your mother or another caretaker treated violently
  • a member of your household being incarcerated or addicted to the use of harmful substances
  • experiencing the loss of a parent or sibling
  • not always having the food you need or the clothing and other necessities that you need during your childhood
  • feeling like you aren’t loved or protected by your family
  • physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
  • having a household member with depression or another mental health concern
  • growing up in foster care
  • experiencing chronic childhood illness
  • and more

Using Dr. Louis' unique BALANCE Framework™, you'll look into physical and emotional health factors that you'll need to explore in order to address your health in the most thorough manner possible. You'll use functional medicine and conventional testing to uncover the underlying root cause(s) of your chronic health concerns. As a part of the program, we'll look into:

  • Your Individual Genetics
  • Poor Glycemic Control
  • Thyroid Dysfunction
  • Reproductive Hormone Imbalances
  • Poor GI Health & Microbiome Disturbances
  • Inflammation Levels
  • Stress Hormone Dysregulation
  • And Much More

2

Address Past Trauma & Boost EQ

Unaddressed trauma can seriously wreak havoc on physical and mental health, while increased emotional intelligence can improve wellbeing.

Unaddressed trauma such as commonly comes about as a result of adverse childhood experiences and negative emotions can actually serve as barriers to healing. Through group meetings with our Social-Emotional Health Specialist, we'll help you process your past by taking a panoptic inventory, assessing how your past has impacted your life to this day (for better and for worse), assessing your current coping strategies, and developing new, healthier strategies for coping. You'll also work toward improving your weak points on our emotional intelligence scale, which research has shown to result in improved mental and overall wellbeing.

3

Detailed Diet & Lifestyle Plan

Believe it or not, diet and lifestyle play significant roles in not only physical but also mental health.

You and your health coach will construct detailed diet and lifestyle plans in order to ensure that poor lifestyle habits are not getting in the way of your health. You'll also track your lifestyle habits over the course of the program to make sure you're eating and living in the manner that is calculated to provide you with the greatest return on your investment in your health and you'll participate in virtual appointments with your health coach to make sure you don't fall off the wagon.

4

Individualized Holistic Recommendations

We'll take the guesswork out of your holistic approach.

You'll address your physical and mental health concerns using vetted professional-grade supplements so you don't have to wonder if you're taking the right things or whether or not they'll be effective. You'll also consider the effects of any natural therapies when used along with any pharmaceutical medication you may already be taking so that you can avoid known interactions and stay healthy and safe. You'll learn ways to counteract the nutrient-depleting effects of your pharmaceutical medication (if applicable) so you can live your best life now, with or without medication.

5

Functional Medicine Labs and Assessments

You'll utilize comprehensive panels of objective lab testing in order to uncover hidden causes of your physical and mental health concerns.

You'll get access to the very functional medicine labs Dr. Louis uses with her patients in her private practice and you'll learn how to interpret your lab results as well. You'll also be equipped to discuss your lab results with your primary care physician, psychiatrist, and/or the other members of your medical team.

6

Our Supportive Online Community

Community is immensely important when it comes to achieving any health goals.

You'll be provided access to our supportive online community consisting of the MHA Spot team and other women who are also going through the ACE-Defying Group Wellness Program. This is another forum through which you can get your questions answered, share your wins and failures, and find support from likeminded women who truly want you to succeed.

7

Live Coaching in an Intimate Group Setting

As a part of the ACE-Defying Group Wellness Program, you'll have plenty of opportunities for one-on-one feedback on your specific health concerns and progress via our live coaching meetings.

In addition to instruction provided via video and other media as well as your individualized health coaching appointments, the ACE-Defying™ Group Wellness Program includes live group meetings with Dr. Janelle Louis that focus on addressing physical and mental health concerns. For these meetings, you will be assigned to the coaching group that is most relevant to your health needs and goals (e.g. a group focused on either mental health, autoimmune disease, reproductive concerns, or metabolic concerns) so that the questions asked and the topics discussed will be as beneficial to you as possible as you progress along your wellness journey. You'll also participate in group meetings with our Social-Emotional Health Specialist. These meetings will focus on addressing mental and emotional concerns.

What People Are Saying About Working with Dr. Janelle Louis & Team

I can’t say enough about this practice. Dr. Louis identified a long term condition that enabled me to get off an RX that I had been on for years! I was VERY hesitant; I probably spoke to Jeff (the office manager) at least 3 different times for a total of 75 minutes before I pulled the trigger ... peppering him with questions about the different plans, what if it doesn’t work, sharing that I felt like I had tried everything with no results ... he was confident they could help, and he was right. Bottom line: best time and money I’ve ever spent. Save yourself the research, skepticism, etc - and just get in there..."

I had been working with 2 other naturopathic doctors who both had some very good and helpful advice. However, Dr. Louis took her time listening to my story and she asked some important questions which helped her to determine the best course of action for my specific situation. I was able to see better results under her care than with the 2 previous naturopathic doctors. Since I have been following her detailed wellness plan I feel significantly better."

Several months ago I began receiving help from Focus. It has been a true blessing to me. My regular medical provider had missed a very important medical issue and because of Focus and their dedication to listening and searching for root causes they were able to help me obtain a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. I have been suffering from Hashimoto's disease and was unaware. I am extremely thankful that I am now feeling much better because of the nutritional and herbal information that has been provided to me. I had been sick for a couple years and was at the point of not even being able to spend time doing any of the things I used to do. Happiness and laughter had been gone for a long time. But recently after making the changes recommended I have increased energy. I am not as depressed and I am able to wake up early and have my devotions again. I now have the desire to exercise and make better health choices.and I am laughing again and smiling.

Christina S.

I work in the field of traditional medicine, but over the years there has been much change in the relationship between providers and their patients. The overwhelming philosophy has been to treat disease and not so much to prevent disease. Personally, I have struggled with anxiety and sleep related problems most of my adult life and while I have been on pharmaceutical drugs for those issues, they were still not fully controlled. What I came to realize was missing, was the link between traditional medicine and integrative medicine and I found that with Dr. Louis.

By integrating her holistic approach into my care, I am now essentially free from daily anxiety and my sleep has improved dramatically. Her breadth of knowledge is impressive; not only of more natural options, but also regarding traditional pharmaceuticals and how they impact the body. And she is great at sitting and really listening to what her patients have to say..."
